How do I know that my asthma is in control ?

Asthma control has 2 components:

Symptom control and

Risk factors for future risk of flare-ups

Assessment of symptom control

GINA assessment of asthma control in adults, adolescents and children 6-11 years

✴ In the past 4 week, did you have

Assessment of risk factors for a sudden flare-up of COPD

Potentially modifiable independent risk factors include:

Uncontrolled asthma symptoms

Poor adherence to medicines or incorrect use of prescribed inhaler

High use of reliever medicines

Poor lung function

Major psychological problems

Exposure to smoking and allergens

Other diseases like obesity or confirmed food allergy

Other major independent risk factors include:

Ever being admitted in intensive care unit (ICU) for asthma<

Having 1 or more severe flare-ups in the last 12 months.

Having one or more of these risk factors increases the risk of flare-up even if symptoms are well controlled.
