Does asthma symptoms have a set pattern in all patients?
No. Asthma does not have a set pattern. Its symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe and can vary from person to person. It can flare up at times and disappear for long periods.
When is a child at high risk of getting asthma?
A young child who has frequent wheezing with colds or respiratory infections is more likely to have asthma if:
One or both parents have asthma
Child has signs of allergies, including the allergic skin condition eczema (reddening of skin with irritation)
CChild has allergic reactions to pollens or other airborne allergens
Child has wheezing even when he or she doesn't have a cold or other infection
Does Asthma affect only children?
No. Asthma affects people of all ages, but most often starts in childhood. Most children who have asthma develop their first symptoms before 5 years of age. Young children who often have respiratory infections are at highest risk of developing asthma that continues beyond 6 years of age.
